Originally built in 1917 as a bakery, with rooms to let upstairs. W.J. Helvey and Charles B. Laune launched the Laune Theatre in the existing Temple Building on July 11, 1934. The Temple Building was briefly used as a J.C. Penney’s store. The Laune Theatre was short-lived closing on December 27, 1934. On February 9, 1935, the location reopened as the Rialto Theatre with “The Westerner” starring Tim McCoy. The Rialto Theatre closed on January 31, 1940.
The location was called the New Isis Theatre briefly thereafter though the majority of the Isis Theatre’s history was in its Center Street location.

The KS Historical Society entry on this building makes no mention of a New Isis. The description here makes it sound like it was known as New Isis after it closed? Anyway, it was remodeled again to turn it into the Rialto. An outside ticket booth was added, and some improvements were made inside.
The building itself dates to 1917. It was originally a bakery, and the upper stories were a rooming house. The ‘Modern Rooms’ script is still visible in the second floor windows. The J.C. Penney tenure was very brief, as their larger location next door was remodeled.
