Libanus 1877

In the small town of Borth, in Ceredigion, on the Mid-Wales coast to the north of Aberystwyth, the Gerlan Chapel built in 1877 has been transformed into a boutique cinema, theatre and restaurant by Peter Fleming and his partner Grug Morris.

Originally offered a lease on the chapel by the building’s trustees, Peter instead made an offer to purchase the chapel and its chapel house as a package. His initial offer was rejected, and the buildings were put on the open market. However, eighteen months later, after lengthy negotiations, a purchase price was eventually agreed and, in 2014, Peter acquired the buildings.

Although the chapel had not been used for several years, the building had been looked after, and was in good condition. The transformation was undertaken by Mid-Wales building designers and planning consultants Hughes Architects, with building and refurbishment work being undertaken by Peter working with sub-contractors.

A glass, enclosed veranda has been added at first floor level on the front, and the buildings have been thoroughly modernised. However, as many original features as possible have been retained.

Peter and Grug’s vision for Libanus 1877 is as a restaurant and a luxury, boutique cinema with a varied programme, comfortable seating, catering for the whole community.

The latest 4k digital projection equipment and 7.1 surround sound have been installed. They intend to show a mixture of the latest releases, classics, live satellite events and ‘back by popular demand’ films.

Libanus 1877 opened in February 2017, with the official launch taking place a month later, in March, when the chapel celebrated its 140th anniversary.
