Gate Cinema

Located in Drogheda, County Louth. The Gate Cinema opened on 2nd November 1944 with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour in “Dixie”. Bob McCabe, a local businessman, and Donal O’Hagan, a Dundalk solicitor, arranged for it to be built. The proceeds for the opening night went to the St Vincent DePaul Society. The cinema had 1,000 seats and employed a total of 14 staff. It had a 28ft wide proscenium, a stage 20ft deep and three dressing rooms. It is also believed to have hosted variety and pantomime productions.

The Gate Cinema closed at the end of December 1973 with “David Copperfield” starring Richard Attenborough and Cyril Cusack, and was later demolished to make way for the new Bridge of Peace across the River Boyne.
