The Capitol Theatre opened on January 12, 1927, according to the theater’s history on this web page. The listing in the Buechner & Orth papers was for the year of design and construction, not the year of opening. Henry Orth was probably lead architect on the project, as Charles Buechner died in 1924.

The first listing I could find for the Capitol was in 1929 with 822 seats.

The Capitol is one of the theaters listed in the finding aid to the Buechner & Orth archives at the University of Minnesota. As the Capitol was built in 1926, it seems unlikely that Charles Buechner, who died in 1924, would have had anything to do with the project.

The Capitol is now home to the Aberdeen Community Theater and its website is essentially the theater’s website. Films are still shown occasionally along with the ACT’s productions: http://aberdeencommunitytheatre.com/

The Capitol theater has been playing films for about 5 years now. They show great movies that the mainstream theaters won’t show. The Capitol hosts the SD Film Festival and a 48 hour film competition called Fischgaard Film Project. It is also the home of Aberdeen Community Theater which puts on plays. The Capitol Theater also hosts several musical concerts throughout the year.

I was born and raised in aberdeen SD and saw many movies at the Capitol. Its location is 417 S. Main st. They no longer show movies there, but use it for live productions. It is now the home of the Aberdeen Community Theater and thier web site lists the entire history of the theater. At one time there was another theater across the street and 2 blocks south called the Orpheum. That theater was torn down in the late 70’s.

There was a color photo of the Capitol in today’s business section of the LA Times. The story concerned the Knight-Ridder newspaper chain, which I believe is headquartered in Aberdeen.
