In Barnard Castle, County Durham, the Victoria Hall appears to have opened as a variety house, presenting live performances in addition to, according to an advert from the 1920’s, “The Best Up-to-date Pictures”. A 1923 advert has “The Sheik”, starring Rudolph Valentino, playing from Monday to Wednesday. This indicates a regular film programme, though presumably live entertainments still continued.
Despite not being listed in the 1940 Kinematograph Year Book, the Victoria Hall was listed in the 1953 edition. By that time it was operated by MBC Cinemas (proprietors of the town’s Scala Cinema) and had a 26ft proscenium and two dressing rooms. The Victoria Hall does not appear in the Cinema Theatre Association’s 1980 Cinema Directory.
At some stage the Victoria Hall was demolished. Housing now stands on the site.
