A more accurate address (at least for Google) is 101 Lodge Rd, Hiawatha, KS.

This places it square in the middle of where the drive-in once stood. With the old entrance gone and the roads around the area radically changed, the 101 Lodge Rd address is correct one to locate the property on Google Maps. http://tinyurl.com/zjp2teg

I respectfully disagree with Drive-In 54.

Google Maps operates in the present, not the past. For location purposes, the address that correctly maps directly on the property should be used if accuracy is the primary factor.

It should be noted that Lodge Road did not exist in 1962 as the topo map indicates, so it cannot be the original address of the drive-in.

The use of cross streets in this case is closer, but not as close as 101 Lodge Rd, Hiawatha, KS which as the map indicates is smack-dab center of the property itself and is virtually next to where the projection booth/concession stand was located.

Naturally, it is up to the site administrator as to which address to use. IMO, accuracy is the most important factor when it comes to locating the property with Google Maps which means using modern addresses, not historic ones or cross-streets that are not as accurate.

To keep the information correct about the Hiaway DI. This is the address were the DI was located at: 207 Lodge Rd Hiawatha, KS 66434. This is just for the drive-in record only, no matter what Goggle maps says or points to.

Boxoffice, July 27, 1970: “Motion Picture Booking Agency has taken over the booking and buying of O.C. Johnson’s Hiway (sic) Drive-In Theatre in Hiawatha, Kan. Bill Silver said Johnson wrote last week that he is getting along fine after undergoing surgery a couple of weeks ago.”

In 1971, Johnson ran at least a couple of classified ads in Boxoffice looking to buy used projection equipment for his “Hiaway Drive-In.”
