The Princess Theatre was opened on 30th August 1911. It was designed by Marino Lucas with decorations by J & T. Gunn. By 1912 it was screening Spencer’s Pictures. In 1920 it was taken over by Greater Union. In 1938 it was taken over by Hoyts and in 1939 it was taken over by independent operators and was remodelled in an Art Deco style, again the work of J & T. Gunn with architect Charles Neville Hollinshed. By 1946 it was again operated by Hoyts.
