Roxy Drive-In

Left: 9th May 1942. Example of program with different support features at each venue. Right: 25th July 1942. After running every Saturday night for nearly two years (with a winter 1941 break), Drive-In screenings came to an abrupt end after the showing of “Great Guns” on 25th July 1942. Townsville experienced its first Japanese air attack after screenings had concluded that evening, when several bombs were dropped at around midnight. Further bombings took place between midnight and 2 a.m. on the following Tuesday and Wednesday nights, by long distance flying boats based in Rabaul (New Guinea). Had it not been for the set-backs suffered by the Japanese in The Battle of the Coral Sea in May, Townsville would have been in the firing line to suffer much more serious attacks.
