Photograph courtesy Ian Corke. The Ruston diesel engine which generated 110volts DC for the Empire Cinema, even though the town had transitioned to 240volts AC. It was installed by Ian Corke’s father who had started as a rewind boy having left the National School on Claye Street at the age of 14. He went on to become the cinema manager. The Empire Cinema managing director was John Langham Brown.
