The final moments of “The Rialto Theatre” Kew, depicted in the photo supplied by the “Kew History Group”. Should we care? – The truth is, none of us read the signs and we gave up without a fight. Hoyts had built a massive suburban circuit that would crumple, almost over night with the advent of TV. In the good days Saturday nights were always full, while most midweek nights were well attended.

A company called Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures purchased and extended the life of a number of suburban theatres, by playing movies to a Greek audience that were hungry for memories of home. Today you can count on one hand the number of Picture Palaces that have survived. The Rialto ceased screening movies in 1961, however it’s life was extended for a further 21 years by Artransa & The Revival Church, before the wreckers ball also fell upon it.
