Kings Theatre Queens Parade and Sydney Road, Fawkner, VIC - Grand opening Monday Oct 19, 1914.

Located in the north Melbourne district of Fawkner. The King’s Theatre on Queens Parade, just opposite the Boundary Hotel, was the first building from the corner of Sydney Road. It was commissioned by Mr. E. Moss a local resident and retailer with an initial seating capacity for 600. The frontage spanned 67ft with a depth of 120ft. The stage measured 20ft x 12ft with two adjoining spacious dressing rooms. The building was constructed by Mr. H. Moss and was lit by air gas. The grand opening was on 19th October 1914. Mr McCallum, (President of the Broadmeadows Shire Council) opened the theatre with the added patronage of His Worship, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Melbourne. The nominal admission charge should be the means of a large attendance. Patrons were pleased that a tram stop was located close to the theatre entrance. A military concert, and a dance followed the opening ceremony. The King’s Theatre enterprise appeared to thrive and hosted a number of presentations for returned soldiers in the area, and continued to do so for several years. An auction was advertised in January 1917 pointing out that the theatre had particular value for picture show proprietors. The auction was handed in. The King’s Theatre operated until 1952. It has since been demolished and housing built on the site.
