Located to the north east of the city centre, The Niels Stensen Foundation of Florence is inspired by the research and methodology of Nicholas Steno (1638-1686), a Danish physician and geologist.
Recognised by the President of the Republic on 3rd March 1959, the Foundation is run by the Jesuits and was inaugurated on 1st November 1964.
From its very beginning, the Foundation has played an important role in the city’s cultural debate. Inspired by the scientific and cultural labour of Nicholas Steno (scientific research and political-cultural mediation), it aims to promote research and comparisons between different cultures, with initiatives to promote inter-cultural dialogue, research groups, training courses, conferences, seminars and a film club.
The building houses the Cinema Auditorium (with 242 seats, including two reserved for the handicapped), a library (containing some 55,000 volumes and 72 historical journals), reading rooms and two meeting rooms: Jesuit Library Hall (50 seats) and the Sala film library (30 seats).
Film programming is of the art-house and film festival variety.
