Village Clayton Drive-In

Located in the southeast Melbourne district of Clayton. Opened as the Metro Twin Drive-In on 23rd May 1957, it was operated by Metro Goldwyn Mayer. The name was later changed to Village Clayton Drive-In(date unknown?). The drive-in closed in 1984, and (the ramps?) became a day car park for Monash University. The floodlight towers remain, and possibly the snack bar and bio box and standby generator housing are still there. The screens and the speaker posts(and speakers) may be gone. The sign is gone.

I’ve added an aerial photo I’ve found, also the Australian Synchrotron is on half of the site while the car park is on the other half. Part of the original entrance road and the gates can be seen on 2009 Google Street View but its since been redeveloped and no trace remains, the entrance road was on Blackburn Rd right on the end of the site.

On opening night, field one had 732 cars, and field 2 had 642 cars.

Now an industrial park, no sign of original drive-in remains. Typical of MGM, this was a state-of-the-art drive-in. The only drive-in screens I know of that had curved screens.
