This brought back memories & I hardly hear anybody talk about this small theater. I went there in the late 50s-early 60s (mostly for the “kiddie mattines”) when I was a kid. I remembered “7th Voyage of Sinbad” & others that were shown (like “House on Haunted Hill” & “The Time Machine”.) The mattines included cartoons, short comedy & a serial chapter. We always booed the bad guys & a rousing cheer when the good guys got the upper hand. I thank you for existing & for letting me share my good times.
The Grove was an Organ Power Pizza in its very last days. It finally closed up for good around 1983 or so. They sold off the fixtures and I had four original seats that I completely refurbished and kept for years. They looked great but were as uncomfortable as Hell. Offered them to the LG Historic Society but of course they weren’t interested so I finally wound up tossing them.
Boxoffice, June 28, 1952: “Two new theatres has their grand openings recently. One was the Grove, of Lemon Grove, Calif., owned by J. Van Gilse.”
