In Rayleigh, Essex, on the left side of Bellingham Lane, stood a large house where Mrs Bellingham lived. This became Miss Collier’s School for Young Ladies. Just past the school, and running alongside the lane was a hall, which formed part of the school. This was used for school shows and pantomimes.
When the school closed, the building was acquired by two local businessmen, Bert Thomas, a sign writer, and estate agent Ernest Clayton. The hall was converted into the Rayleigh Cinema. It was a brick building that included a café. Films were projected using rear projection from behind the screen. It opened around 1924.
During 1930 sound equipment was installed. In 1931 the cinema was renamed the Cosy Talkie Theatre.
This only lasted until autumn 1936 when the then-owners, the Bostock circuit, closed it. They demolished it and built a new cinema, the Regal Cinema, in its place (see the separate Cinema Treasures entry).

My Parents moved to Rayleigh in 1970, I was 6 yrs old and had 2 younger brothers, I went to Sat morn shows in 1972 and my Dad took me to see a James Bond double (You only live Twice and Thunderball) I live in Rayleigh again now tho my Parents divorced in ‘79 and Mum lives in Hullbridge & Dad in Chelmsford, love Rayleighs History.
