The IMAX Theatre at Sunset Place was opened in 1998. It was located at the US-1 entrance to the Shops at Sunset Place parking garage. It closed in 2003.
It became a LA Fitness gymnasium which closed in 2026.

On Google Streetview if you look a few yards north on US-1 to where there’s a red sign saying “AMC Sunset Place 24” above a blue sign saying “IMAX”, that’s what I was describing as the US-1 entrance to the Shops at Sunset Place. …. If one were to make the right turn under the Sunset Place logo sign and immediately look to the right, you’d see the LA Fitness.
Although the AMC Sunset Place opened in late 1998, the IMAX opened later in 1999 and closed in 2003.
The IMAX theatre at Sunset Place opened on January 21st, 1999 with “T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous” and “Everest”. Grand opening ad posted.
On April 16, 2026, I was walking through Sunset Place when I noticed that the LA Fitness had closed.
A nearby LA Fitness sign was gone, and exercise equipment had been placed outside the door on the first floor waiting to be loaded into a large truck.
I stood at what had once been the IMAX Theatre’s door and looked through the glass remembering buying movie tickets in there.
I was haunted feeling that this means Sunset Place is one step closer to closing, to be demolished and replaced by a new concept also to be called Sunset Place, though a front page Miami Herald article from July 21, 2026 titled “When is Sunset Place Getting Demolished? – Ambitious Plan for South Miami Delayed” said there is still no closing date, (and I was told by an employee of Game Time on the third floor that their lease had been extended until New Years Eve 2026).
