In Pontnewydd, now a district of Cwmbran, in Gwent, the White Rose Cinema opened in 1914. It was run by the local families of Miller and Hollway.
It was listed in the 1931 Kinematograph Year Book (albeit with only the information that it was equipped with Edibell sound) but it was not in the 1940 edition, perhaps indicating that it had closed for a period of time.
It was listed in the 1953 edition, by which time it was owned by Rally Rinks & Cinemas Ltd., of Cardiff and it had British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound. That entry gave a proscenium width of 18ft.
The White Rose Cinema was still open in 1972, but later closed and became a bingo hall.
By the time I visited, in July 2010, the building had been transformed into housing on the first floor, with Cwmbran Angling on the ground floor. The street frontage is most un-cinematic, but the former auditorium is obvious at the rear.

Hi Born in 1965 – definitely remember going to see 1 million years BC and Robinson Crusoe on Mars in about 1972 so it was still a cinema then – happy memories.
