Commonwealth Theatres opened the 500-seat Hilltop Twin, designed by Mel Glatz, on October 5, 1973.
On May 11, 1986, the Clovis News-Journal reported that Commonwealth Theatres was being sold to the Cannon Group but would retain the Commonwealth name. The Cannon Group (also known for film production) was portrayed as one of Europe’s largest exhibitors. Commonwealth Theatres was said to be the sixth largest chain in the U.S. with 425 screens in 12 states.
In 1989 Commonwealth Theatres sold the Hilltop Twin to United Artists Theatres. In August of 1990 it was reported that Allen Theatres was buying from United Artists Theatres 11 New Mexico locations, including the two in Clovis.
While operated by Allen Theatres, it closed on June 28, 2006. The Clovis News noted that attendance at the discount house had been dwindling and the North Plains 7 was adequate to serve the needs of the community.
In 2007 it was converted into an early learning center called Future Generations.
