Essoldo Stockton-on-Tees

In Stockton-on-Tees, the former Exchange Hall was converted into the Cinema from 1921. It had 1,438 seats, but was re-seated in 1927, and could then accommodate 1,510 patrons.

Gutted by fire on 30th March 1937, it was re-built to the plans of architects W. & T.R. Milburn, and re-opened on 13th June 1938, with 1,770 seats.

The Cinema was taken over by Essoldo in May 1955. It took that circuit’s name from 18th December 1955.

The Essoldo closed on 5th September 1964 and moved over to bingo.

The auditorium was destroyed by fire on 28th November 2002; most of the remainder of the building was destroyed by yet another fire on 9th June 2005.

When I visited, in October 2005, only the street frontage remained. In 2016 the space is in use by Franks, a flooring store.
