Located on the corner of Bidston Avenue and Norman Street in Birkenhead, Merseyside. The Avenue Super Theatre was opened on 2nd February 1928 with “Convoy” and Charlie Chaplin in “The Toreador’s Return”. Seating was provided for 878 in the stalls and 422 in the balcony. It had a Holophane lighting system which gave a change of colour combinations every few minutes. There was a spacious stage, which was used for occasional concerts. There was a cafĂ© for the convenience of its patrons and the cinema also had a free car park.

The Avenue Super Theatre was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system and screened its first ‘talkie “The Desert Song” starring John Boles on August Bank Holiday Monday 1930.

Disaster struck on 12th March 1941 when the cinema received a direct hit from German bombs. The remains of the ruined building stood for many years until they were eventually demolished and the Avenue Hotel was built on the site.
