Savoy Cinema

In the mid-Devon town of South Molton, the Savoy Cinema was built by Mr G. Eastmond, of Tiverton. It opened in 1932.

The 1940 and 1953 Kinematograph Year Books list the owner as South Molton & District Cinema Company Ltd. and the proscenium as 20ft wide.

The Savoy Cinema was w=sill open in the early-1970’s.

The building eventually became the North Devon Auction Rooms, run by John D. Fleming. By happy coincidence, bearing in mind its previous use, Mr Fleming’s father had been a cinema manager in Torquay in the 1930’s.

The Auction Rooms were operating when I visited, in July 2003, but more recently they have moved out and, in 2009, according to Google Street View, the building was boarded up. By October 2016 it had been demolished and housing was being built on the site.

The Savoy was still operating into the early 1970’s.
