Paramount Theatre on Harvey Road

The Paramount Theatre was opened by Newfoundland Amusements on Harvey Road in downtown St. John’s on September 1, 1944. Shortly after Newfoundland joined Canadian Confederation in 1949, Famous Players became a partner in Newfoundland Amusements and assumed management of the Paramount Theatre. The single-screen theatre seated 1,195.

The Paramount Theatre was forced to close in 1973 when its roof caved in shortly after the theatre was evacuated during a showing of the movie “Mary, Queen of Scots” due to structural problems involving the roof. It stood derelict for several years thereafter until it was purchased and extensively renovated into an office building called the Paramount Building in the 1980’s.

Grand opening ad posted. It was the first Famous Players theatre to be called Paramount.
