Pavilion Cinema

In Girvan, on the west coast of Scotland, the Pavilion Cinema is not listed in the 1914 Kinematograph Year Book, but it does appear in the 1931 edition. It was then owned by Pavilion Company Ltd. the lessee and manager was W. G. Knott.

By the 1940 edition the proprietor was given as Pavilion (Girvan) Ltd. This also gives a proscenium width of 24ft.

The Pavilion Cinema is also listed in the 1966 edition, but had closed by 1977 when it was in office use as Bridge House.

On 4th July 1997 the building became Flix Theme Bar and Pool Room. This is how I saw it in June 2003. It subsequently closed for a few years, but re-opened in September 2014, “complete with a new shot bar, sound system and lighting”. The building is crammed with all manner of colourful movie-related memorabilia, which nicely acknowledges its past life as a picture house.

In 2016 the downstairs section of the building was purchased by a church, and after refurbishment re-opened on 20th February 2017. It now presents childrens' and family films every other Saturday morning.

Our church (Milestone Christian Fellowship) bought the downstairs of this building, opening after renovations on 20 February 2017. In a nod to the building’s history, we now run a Cinema Club here every other Saturday, with a Matinee mainly for children and a Feature in the evening. Details are on the Cinema Club Facebook page ( If there’s any interest I’d be delighted to supply pictures of the building as it is now, inside and out.

Adamoell- please do add some interior views of this venue!! It’s great that a cinema club is also still keeping the cinematic use of the building as well as being a church… great stuff!
