Palace Cinema

In the Cheshire town of Crewe, the Electric Palace cinema opened on 16th May 1910. The opening ceremony was conducted by the town’s mayor, with the proceeds from the matinee being donated to the Cottage Hospital. It operated from 08:30am to 11:00pm.

Later known as the Palace Cinema, rear projection was utilised from the back of a 28ft deep stage.

The cinema was refurbished in the early-1920’s (which might have been when the name change took place) and it was advertised as a “100% cine-variety house”.

Western Electric(WE) sound was installed in 1930, while a live revue was being presented. The first ‘talkie’ was “Hollywood Revue”. Frome 1931 to 1933 it was operated by J.F. Emery Circuit.

The Palace Cinema was acquired by Circuits Management Association (an amalgamation of Odeon Theatres Ltd. and Gaumont British Theatres, which soon became the Rank Organisation) on 12th December 1955, but closed less than a year later, on 29th September 1956.

The building eventually became an MFI store. In August 2002, when I visited, the horizontally sub-divided building was home to Edleston Road Carpets and The Leisure Club. More recently, The Leisure Club has been replaced by Ultimate Martial Arts.

I used to visit The Palace as a child with my mother during the early/mid 1950,s. By this time the projection room was at the rear of the stalls seating with an almost level if not uphill rake to the screen. I remember looking through the projection room door which had been left open to see the “huge” projectors at work.
