In the small town of Anstey, a few miles to the north of Leicester, in the Midlands, the Coronet Cinema opened in 1937. It was owned by Jack Fisher and ‘Bertie’ Baum, had a circle and comfortable tip-up seating throughout. There was a large car park, originally intended for a dance hall, but this never materialised.
By 1950 the Coronet Cinema had been renamed the Savoy Cinema, and was owned by Mr G.T. Ball, 115 Leicester Road, Blaby. According to the 1953 Kinematograph Year Book, the owners by then were W. Barker and A.A. Toy.
The Savoy Cinema closed in the 1960’s and was converted into use as a garage and filling station. This did well until a new garage opened on an adjacent site. The ‘Savoy’ garage closed in 1988. Two side extensions were added, and the building re-opened as the Savoy Diner in 1990. In a nod to the past, customers could watch silent films while dining.
However, this venture was not successful. After a period of closure, it re-opened in 1992 as the Pink Elephant Indian restaurant.
In 2001 the building was acquired by Leicester ironmongers Broughtons and converted into a showroom and retail outlet.
