Wabash Theater

The Wabash Theatre like many independent theatres are all but memories to the movies. It was opened prior to 1928. By 1950 it was operated by Eastland Theaters Co. and was still open in 1952, but had closed by 1955.

I found this at lapl.org
“Brick theater and stores- A.S. O'Neil… will build a 2-story theater building 98X135 feet at 3010-3018 Wabash Ave for Pete Lasher.
Starrett & Payne, architects, 6 offices, cost $65,000.00. 1925

I remember passing the forlorn marquee of this abandoned neighborhood theater in the Boyle Heights/City Terrace section of Los Angeles decades ago.

I’m surprised at the lack of commentary here, considering the lively discussions on the pages for the Golden Gate and other East Los Angeles theaters, and also considering the expertise of those regulars who seem to know technical details about practically every theater!

I drove by yesterday. 3014 is a parking lot – no trace of any theater.

Advertised in the LA Times on 4/22/42. Double feature was “Wolf Man” and “Vanishing Virginian”.

Worked at Wabash one summer. It was not a big money maker. It was a hangout for the neighborhood kids and they could cause some problems. This was in 1948.
It was pretty run down then and there was not much effort to keep it up
The group that owned the eastland theatres including the Wabash sold out to other people and bought several drive inns called Alladan drive inns. This was in the 50s
