Vermont Theatre

The Vermont Theatre was one of many independent theatres that once lined S. Vermont Avenue. It was opened in 1922 with 1,000 seats and was equipped with a Robert Morton organ. By 1927 it was operated by the L. Lou Bard chain Far West Theatres Inc. The Vermont Theatre was still open in the mid-1960’s, but had been closed and demolished by 1967 when a shopping center had replaced it.

Is there a listing on CT for a Vermont Theater at 1417 West 24th Street? There’s and ad for this theater under Moving Picture Theaters of Los Angeles from the LA Times for March 9, 1914.

This is the only one I know about in that area:

Also, could anyone tell me if this theater was built and the name if so?

This is from Feb. 5, 1922 in the LA Times.

Back in the 50s, there was a small and ordinary theater on Vermont around 90th which I attended and “Thought” was also called the Vermont. Looking at Google Street-View, I see a small Church which appears to be a former theater listed at 9115 S. Vermont. It fits. Wonder if anyone knows anything about it ? Is that location listed under some other name ?

9115 S. Vermont was the Manchester Bowling Academy before it was a church. Advertised in the LA Times from 1942 to about 1964.

There is a one-page article on this theatre in the 4th March 1922 edition of “Motion Picture News” available online at

Thanks for posting the photos, Mike. I’d had no idea this house was Egyptian in style.
