Located on the east side of Pier Street, between Hay Street and Murray Srtreet. The first Salvation Army Fortress Hall opened in August 1899. The first film screenings were on 20th August 1902 with “High Diving in Paris”, “Kicking Cow”, “Pillow Fight”, “Fishing Fleet in Full Sail”, “Scenes from the Boxer Rebellion”, “The Turnout of the Chicago Fire brigade”, “The Duke of York’s Visit to Hot Springs in New Zealand”, etc. Screenings ceased in(1910?).
A new Fortress Hall opened in 1930, but screenings were never presented there. The Salvation Army sold both fortress Halls in 1991. The second Fortress Hall is now apartments. The third(current) Fortress Hall on the North-west corner of William Street and Newscastle Street, never shown films that I know of. The original Fortress Hall is still there, now converted for use as offices for legal firms, and a restaurant(Sahara).

The original Fortress hall building also includes a restaurant called City Heart(Indian food)–(48 Pier Street) to the left of the Fortress Hall entrance, as well as the Other restaurant(Sahara – Middle Eastern cuisine) to the right of the Fortress Hall entrance(also 48 Pier Street). The entrance of the Fortress Hall still has the words Salvation Army Fortress above the doorway.
Correction – the words above the entrance doorway are Salvation Army Headquarters.
The address is 48 Pier Street.
