Classic Chippenham

In Chippenham, Wiltshire, the Gaumont Palace opened on 14th November 1936. It was renamed Gaumont around 1937, then Odeon on 21st October 1962.

It was renamed Classic Cinema after being taken over by that circuit on 10th December 1967. The Classic Cinema closed on 27th April 1974. The building became a store, then a nightclub that closed around 2002.

The auditorium was subsequently demolished, with the foyer block being transformed into flats, at first and second floor level, with offices and retail units on the ground floor.

Architects were W. E. Trent & Sydney Trent; part of Gaumont’s ‘Division 8’, this was the Albany Ward/PCT operated cinemas within the company. Proscenium width of 30ft, it also had four dressing rooms, a British Acoustics sound system had been installed, together with the ‘Ardente’ system for the hard of hearing.
