Rio Kino

A former dance hall, the Backhaus Kino opened, with 354 seats, in 1906. Name changes came quickly: Promenaden-Lichtspiele and Alhambra in 1919 and Corso in 1925, by which time it had been enlarged to 407 seats. From 1938 it became the Rio Kino, now with a capacity of about 500. Closed in 1993, it re-opened as a triple screen operation, seating 250 in Screen 1, 110 in Screen 2 and 65 in Screen 3.

I photographed it in April 1999, during the Cinema Theatre Association (CTA) visit to Berlin. It had closed in 1997. In 2015, demolition was likely as a housing development was set to swallow up the wider area.
