The St. Andrews Cinema opened in July 10, 1970 as part of the local Arthur Theatres chain.

When Arthur Theatres went out of business, the Wehrenberg Theatres chain took it over for a couple years. In 1983, the St. Andrews became an independent second run theatre with a discount policy. The theater was made into a three-screen in 1997.

This theater and the Keller 8 are the only two discount theaters left in the St. Louis market. The St. Andrews Cinema 3 was damaged by a fire on October 2, 2019.

According to their website, they’ll be upgrading to digital projection next week. I guess they still make enough of a profit to afford the upgrade. Maybe they’ll make other upgrades as well. The last time I went there, an armrest fell off one of the seats, and you could clearly hear the movie in an adjacent screen. It was definitely better before they split it into three screens.

Looks like the status might be changing to Closed after Labor Day, if a new owner isn’t found.

New management/ownership has apparently been found.

Maybe they’ll have some ideas to boost attendance. Like, perhaps, actually showing movies that were filmed in 3D in 3D. As far as I know, that has never been done under the current management/ownership.

The theater is temporarily closed after a small fire early this morning.

According to the marquee, the theater wont be reopening until summer. Either the fire did more damage than the news let on, the repairs are expensive so they’re spacing them out, or they’re taking the opportunity to do additional renovations unrelated to repairs from the fire.

Having been closed for well over a year now, first from the fire, and then the pandemic, the theater is now apparently up for sale.

New ownership must have been found. The marquee now says “Coming Soon”.

Finally, it looks like it will be reopening this year.
