I made my first visit to the Crandell last night. The staff were very friendly and the theatre was a treat. It is in fairly good condition and the non-profit which is running it seems excited to improve it.
The screen appears new and the projection was sharp. The seats on the main floor have been replaced as some point and the balcony seats are original. The balcony was closed when I was there.
I’m terrible with names but I spoke to the person in the box office (Stan, I think) who was kind enough to show me the balcony and the projection booth.
The Crandell Theatre’s web site (click on the Web address at the top of this page), includes a short YouTube video about the theater, including some interior shots.
Looks like a nifty old theater that is still in good shape — a real rarity these days.
The theater has been closed since January, 2010, but will reopen under the ownership of the Chatham Film Club, not-for-profit group: View link
The Crandell Theatre looks like the type of theatre where “Pretty in Pink” would be shown, doesn’t it?
Thanks, Lost Memory. The Crandell Theatre’s marquee looks kind of like an old-fashioned, but fun-looking marquee. Very cheerful.
Well it certainly is PINK! Thanks so much for sharing.
Same here.
Oh very cute! Thanks LM – i’d love to see one of the interior if anyone has one.
The two links posted by Lost Memory go to a “private” page. Does anyone have current interior and exterior photos of this theater? THS is looking at a possible future conclave in the Albany/Berkshire area and i’d like to know if this theater merits a stop.
The theater is also home to the annual film festival, FilmColumbia, which attracts an ever growing number of grade A movies and documentaries.

And to the Columbia County Film Club, which hosts monthly screenings of non-mainstream movies.

Current admission price: $4 for adults, less for kids.
The theater is owned by Quirino family, who have owned and operated it for nearly 50 years. They take the tickets, sell the candy, and project the films.
And now, thanks to the generosity of two local residents, there’s another reason to love the Crandell: a new $30,000, state-of-the-art sound system.
The idea for this gift came about during a dinner conversation one evening between Frank Viggiano, of Chatham-based Viggiano Associates, specializing in high-end consumer electronics, and Gina Harman, part-time Chatham area resident and president of the consumer division of Harman International, the audio and electronics company started by her father.
One of my favorite theatres on earth. I’ve been going there for over thirty years, and still go whenever I’m upstate, though I’ve lived in NC for twenty of those years. Incredibly reasonable prices, both ticket and concession, and a true movie theater experience, especially the lavoratories ;). If you haven’t been, go!
