The Star had its start in 1907 when the Edison Electric Theater Company opened the Electric Theater. W.J. Millard bought it and changed the name to Star Theater. It was completely rebuilt in 1935 and remodeled for more seats in 1937. The Star Theater was called “modernistic” in a June 1935 issue of the Gladwin County Record. It operated until May of 1959.
The building still stands. There are hopes that it might be renovated back into a theater. I remember it as long and narrow, with touches of Art Deco and Aztec or Mayan designs.

In 2009, the Record & Clarion republished this 1935 article about the opening of the rebuilt Star Theatre. A postscript notes that the building is now occupied by the Gladwin County Historical Society.
A recent comment on the Water Winter Wonderland page that lostmemory linked to says that the building now houses the County Historical Museum, and that part of it has been fitted out with some of the Star’s original theater seats and is used for viewing historical videos.
