Oasis Drive-In

Located in the Wonthella, a suburb to the north of Geraldton. The Oasis Drive-In opened on 14th May 1957(first drive-in in country Western Australia?) with Claudette Colbert in “Thunder on the Hill” and Lex Barker in “Yellow Mountain”, plus selected shorts(not named)-(The Geraldton Guardian - 11th May 1960). It had a capacity for 650 cars and there were 50-seats located in the snack bar.

The Oasis Drive-In was closed on 15th May 1985 with Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop”. The drive-in had a closing down sale(advertisement in The Geraldton Gazette - 17th May 1985). After closure the land was sold and is a hardware store and garden centre(Bunnings).

The screen measured 38 feet by 80 feet supported on a frame 58 feet in height. The Oasis Drive-in cost nearly £50000 Australian Pounds to build.

Hi David – We would very much like to add your photograph of the old drive-in to our Local Studies Collection at the Geraldton Library, with your permission. Please advise if OK? Best regards, Trudi Cornish (Coordinator Heritage Services – .gov.au)

Thanks David for getting back to us so promptly. It’s a great shot. We wanted to run it in our weekly Snapshots in Time column in the Geraldton Guardian as well as save the photo to our Collection. I have also just seen the photo on the Cinemaweb website attributing it to Joe Glass. Joe was an active patron of our Library so we will make sure he is acknowledged as the source.
