I remember this theatre being problematic for Starplex. The project was initiated as part of Starplex’s move into higher end new builds (as opposed to the more budget conscious acquisitions and builds they had focused on previously) and there were lofty expectations for the site. Unfortunately, construction was halted mid build, due to some issues with the company developing the property, and the complex sat incomplete for an extended period. By the time the theatre was finally completed, Starplex had sunk a lot of money and effort into the project. The headaches continued, as there remained issues with the development company not fulfilling a few items and some of the individuals initially put in place there allegedly weren’t up to the task at hand. Corporate repeatedly sent people out to the theatre for training and operations tweaks, but the site never lived up to the company’s expectations.
i haven’t been here since near the grand opening, before it was an amc, and the experience was fine; there weren’t a lot of people or staff there, and i think the main concession area (underneath the lobby escalators?) hadn’t been finished yet and/or wasn’t open, but the seat and sound quality i remember being great, but it was basically brand new at that point. haven’t been back since, but newer theaters seem to generally age better than older ones, as they seem to tend to be built with higher-quality materials than they used to be (or maybe those theaters are just..really old).
but yeah i’m also surprised they didn’t further upgrade the idx auditorium. i do recall seeing it listed as “etx” for a while around the time of conversion to an amc, but it looks like amc might’ve sunsetted that into just “prime” (like they did with the auditorium at tysons before it eventually became dolby cinema). actually nevermind i just searched and the url for etx (amctheatres.com/etx/showtimes) now redirects to bigd theaters, which seem to be largely the “amc classic” ones (which i guess are the former carmikes), which this is not. seems like a missed opportunity to have most of the premium format screen work done, and be able to upcharge, which, given the area seems like it’d be a very reasonable return on investment.
I find it fascinating that no one here has been to this theater and made any comments. What DID happen to the former ‘IDX’ screen, I would assume AMC kept the 7.1 surround sound setup, but corporate didn’t invest the time, money, or interest to upgrade it to ‘Prime’ or ‘Dolby Cinema’. Also, the theater’s name is just “AMC Loudoun Station 11” the ‘Starplex’ has been dropped.
has anyone been here and want to comment on this theater? I’ve been reading some Facebook comments and they are largely negative – uncomfortable seats, unhelpful staff, mediocre sound systems – ?? I just read that AMC has purchased the chain outright – so I guess by the end of the year there might be some changes for better or worse.
