Tex Theatre

The Tex Theatre was opened on March 22, 1946 with exploitation features and separate white and African-American screenings of the feature film “White Girls From Hell” (aka “Curse of the Ubangi”). The theatre was a converted retail space, formerly a welding shop, and was owned by V.E. Hamm of Wichtia Falls. The theatre was said to be ‘modern in every way’.

In 1947 it was taken over by World War II veterans Cliff Turner & B.L. Hagle, who installed a more modern cooling system. They briefly went over to screening sub-run westerns from July 4, 1947. The Tex Theatre then returned to mainly exploitation movies and sub-run double features until its closure less than 12 years later. On March 10, 1959 the Tex Theatre advertisements stopped with the last feature being “Broadway Burlesque”.

The building went into use as a domino hall, a recreation hall and finally a thrift store. It now appears to be used for storage.
