McPherson Playhouse

In 1907, Alexander Pantages built his first vaudeville house in what used to be the Old Grand Theatre. Seven years later, on May 18, 1914, Pantages opened this new Pantages Theatre on Government Street.

Later renamed Empire Theatre, then York Theatre, and Totem Theatre. Renamed the Mcpherson Playhouse after Thomas Shanks McPherson, who purchased and donated the theatre to the city of Victoria. Today, it is home to the theatrical productions.

This web page says that the modern wing of the McPherson Playhouse, on the Pandora Street side of the building, was built in 1964-65, and designed by architect Alan Hodgson. There’s a small photo.
