The Sedalia Theatre opened in 1905 and was originally operated by the L. M. Crawford circuit. It displaced the Woods Opera House as Sedalia’s leading venue for road shows and concerts. Movies were shown as early as the 1910’s, but the house also continued to host stage productions and vaudeville through the 1920’s. The Sedalia Theatre was extensively remodeled in 1927, reopening January 30, but the house was not equipped for talking pictures until December, 1929.
In the early-1930’s it was called the Fox Sedalia Theatre, but the chain later dropped the house and it reverted to its original name. It was listed as (Closed) in 1943. After closing, the Sedalia Theatre was converted into a furniture store and warehouse. The long-closed theatre was destroyed by a fire when the building was struck by lightning on November 1, 1977.
