The Old Sign

The Sunset Drive-In was located NE of Miles City on the north side of 94 Business Highway.

It opened in July 1949 with Cornel Wilde in “The Homestretch”. It was operated by Jack Holmes. It was still in operation in the early-1980’s. However, at some later point the drive-in was closed and demolished.

Today, a mini-storage business is on the property with no trace of the old drive-in left save for the remnants of the old entrance road which wraps around the north side of the property.

From the July 16, 1949 issue of BoxOffice:

MILES CITY, MONT. – “Homestretch” was the opening feature at the Sunset Drive-In. The 400-car theater has RCA in-car speakers installed by S. R. Egan of San Francisco. A concession stand was erected at the rear of the area. The Sunset is managed by Jack Holmes.

The Sunset was on the northeast corner of what was then the intersection of US highways 10 and 12. Considering that there were sewage ponds on the other side of 10, I’m surprised that the drive-in survived for such a long time.
