Bell Theatre

A movie theater was listed on the Sanborn Maps at this location as early as 1910 and El Paso de Robles Area Historical Society notes that it was named the Bell Theatre. C.C. Walker, it owner, was mentioned numerous times in Moving Picture World. Mr. Walker passed away in 1922 and his widow sold the building.

Dan Lewis, an early resident, recalls his memories for the Historical Society: “I recall how excited I was, when as a small child, I saw Buster Brown and his dog Tige make a personal appearance there. In 1922 the local firemen put on a minstrel show. As a great performer, I made my debut there as a Xylophone player. With the addition of sound on film the old silent screen became a thing of the past and the Bell Theater became a bit of history.”

After the T&D’s Park Theatre opened in 1921 the Bell Theatre operated concurrently with it until the Bell closed in October of 1928. The Historical Society says the present-day location is in the Sole Tree building.
