Capitol Theatre

New Year’s Day 1924 saw the opening of the Capitol Theatre at 155 S Main Street. Later city directories show the address as 157 S. Main Street. The last entry for the Capitol is for the year 1969. The front part of the building was destroyed in the 1973 fire which took the neighboring Orpheum Theatre.

The back 80% of this building still stands, and painted columns can still be seen on the walls. The building is currently a photographic studio.

The address for this building has been 159 S Main for years. In the middle 1970’s until the early 1980’s this was Steven’s Stationers (where I worked while attending college at ISU). It was obvious from the inside (and out) that this had been a theater.

I’m a bit confused by the description. Was the Capitol’s auditorium in the brick building still standing along Lewis Street? If it was, then the destruction wall with the pilasters along the parking lot must have been the interior wall of the Orpheum Theatre’s auditorium.
