The Sands Drive-In opened on May 13, 1955 with Betty Grable in “Three for the Show” & Philip Carey in “Wyoming Renegades”. It was operated as an independent theatre. In the 1960’s it was listed under Nace Theatres and Forman-Nace Theatres banners in the Arizona Republic.
While operated by Nace Theatres as a $1.25 a carload, triple feature theater, the Sands Drive-In closed in January of 1972. The location today can be found by looking for the entrance to the Sands Apartments.

From the Nov. 5, 1955 Motion Picture Herald:
C. K. Cargile, manager-owner with the Harry L. Nace circuit, has re-opened the Sands drive-in near Mesa, Ariz., complete with a new tower. Two months ago, shortly after the drive-in opened for the first time, a freak desert wind storm flattened the screen structure.
Opened with “Three for the show” and “Wyoming renegades”.
In case you ever wondered where the Motion Picture Herald (sometimes?) got its news:
Boxoffice, Oct. 15, 1955: “C. K. Cargile, manager-owner with the Harry L. Nace circuit, has reopened the Sands drive-in near Mesa, Ariz., complete with a new screen tower. Two months ago, shortly after the drive-in opened for the first time, a freak desert whirlwind flattened the screen structure. The new one, all metal, is 46x96 feet”
