Pocklington Arts Centre

Located in Pocklington, East Yorkshire, 13 miles east of York. It opened as the Oak House Cinema in 1938 with 548 seats and British Acoustic (BA) sound equipment. The proprietors were listed as “Majestic Cinema, (Pocklington) Ltd”. In the 1960’s it changed its name to Ritz Cinema and was listed in 1980 with 410 seats and Kalee equipment. In 1980/1981 the circle was blocked off to make a 200-seat cinema, but this did not last long.

By 1983 the building had re-opened as “The Penny Arcade” a museum of slot machines. An audio-visual show was given in the blocked-off circle then a door opened onto a staircase down into the former stalls, where the museum was. The museum closed in 1994.

It reopened as the Pocklington Arts Centre on 30th April 2000 after extensive fundraising and was refurbished in May 2016.

The Arts Centre re-opened in May 2016 after a full refurbishment, which saw a bar/lounge being created in former storage space on the first floor. A side lounge is fitted with a screen and projector for informal, small-scale screenings.
