When the Continental Theatre opened on November 29, 1963, it was billed as the “Phoenix Showcase Of International Films". “The Continental will bring to Phoenix both American and Foreign films of interest to the mature moviegoer. These films will range from the comic to the dramatic. In keeping with this policy, we begin with a domestic film, never before seen in Arizona. It is a fun filled, carefree comedy of strictly adult appeal. We ask you to call the theatre for its most provocative title and please adults only".

According to the Arizona Republic, in May of 1965 Police entered the theatre and confiscated the film and arrested the owners and employees on charges of showing an obscene film. The theatre was open again in three days and with its advertisements on the theatre page. The owners said, “We plan to continue showing the same type of film we have been showing for the past 18 months, adult films for adults only”.

In March of 1966 a Superior Court judge ruled that the defendants were not guilty and they later filed suit claiming that their constitutional rights were violated but lost the case.

The Continental Theatre closed in 1975.
