Located in Loftus, North Yorkshire, 8 miles south east of Redcar. The Empire Palace of Varieties first opened in 1911 presenting variety acts and films. It was completely rebuilt and enlarged in 1937 as the Empire Theatre. It first closed on 30th May 1959 with Gregory Peck in “The Bravados”.
It became the Regent Bingo Club for several years but in the 1970’s the bingo club transferred to the former Regal Cinema which operated into the 1980’s (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The Empire Theatre reopened as a cinema on 9th December 1977 with David Carradine in “Carquake”. Final closure came in April 1983 when it screened “Hot Bubblegum”. The building was then used for storage.
In 2014 it was offered ‘For Sale’ for £175,000 with permission to build 15 apartments.

Apparently constructed on the stadium principle with a steeply raked rear section utilising the hillside on which it is built. It is located in a residential area on the outskirts of town. The stage does not have a fly tower.
