Flix Brewhouse opened on December 17, 2014, with the “Hobbit", shown in high frame rate 3D and Dolby Atmos sound. For five days leading up to the official opening they showed a mix of old films, including “Beetlejuice", “Caddyshack", and “Raiders of the Lost Ark", (2011). All eight screens were in operation on December 24.
Flix notes “Flix Brewhouse by Galaxy is America’s Cinema Brewery, the only first run movie theatre in the world to incorporate a fully functioning microbrewery. By combining these concepts, Flix delivers to your theatre seat three of America’s great loves, craft beer, great food and the latest movies! All eight of our stadium seating “dining rooms” are outfitted with the latest high-definition digital cinema projection and sound technologies, wall-to-wall curved screens, cushy high back chairs, and our revolutionary Easy Glider moveable table top. Their extensive menu is available at the press of a button".
“Flix Brewhouse is dedicated to providing the best cinema experience possible. Those who are found to be disruptive in the theatre will be asked to leave without a refund. This includes chatty moviegoers, those who cannot put their phones down during the movie, and children who talk, scream, or don’t stay in their seat. Please alert a staff member if another person is disrupting your moviegoing experience. Please remember: You talk, you text, you leave".
Designed by JKR Partners, the $14 million theater was the second Flix Brewhouse, the first being in Round Rock, Texas. Next is a Brewhouse in Carmel, Indiana, due to open in 2015.

Wow. Every word is nothing but a press release. Movies should be for everybody, not just those old enough to drink. Is Flix a nice cinema? Yes. But it’s a shame that forced the oldest and biggest screen in Des Moines to close, which was family friendly. Merle Hay Mall Cinema was a gem. It stinks that Merle Hay Mall decided to open this theater without any consideration to the Merle Hay Mall Cinema.
This theater is under the banner of Galaxy Theaters with theaters in California,Nevada Texas and Washington
JKR Partners have renamed themselves JKRP Architects. There are six photos of the Flix Brewhouse at Merle Hay Mall on this page of their web site.
