Regal Cinema

The Regal Entertainment Centre was built and opened in 1987 near the site of the former Assembly Rooms/Regal Cinema. It contained a 376-seat cinema and a bingo club. It was closed early-1993, but was taken over by new owners Angel Leisure in April 1993. By 1995, the bingo club had closed and was converted into an amusement arcade and pool hall.

The Regal Cinema was closed on 16th March 1999 with “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. It was converted into a nightclub.

The site of the first Regal was further down from the police station opposite Bowen Square, approximately where the car park and part of the Waitrose store now stands.
