Located just outside the city centre close to the Bull Ring. The St. John’s Cinema was opened by the Godsell Brothers in September 1914. In June 1941 it was taken over by the Oscar Deutsch chain of Odeon Theatres Ltd. This was because their newly built Odeon in the city centre had been built but not completed when World War II broke out and had been requisitioned by the Government. On the 29th September 1952 it was taken over by the Miles Byrne chain. Taken over by independent operators in 1954, the St. John’s Cinema was closed on 27th June 1959 with an (X) certificate double bill programme “Femmes de Paris” and “Girl from Hamburg”.
Converted into a bingo club, it was later used as offices and a meeting before becoming a nightclub. This had closed by 2004 and the building was unused.
