Located on Holbrook Lane opposite Parkgate Road, and built on the site of the Corona Picture Theatre which opened in September 1927 with 347 seats and the film “The Kid Brother” starring Harold Lloyd. That building became the Arcadian Pavilion in December 1931 and was sometimes known as the Lyric Cinema.
It was rebuilt during 1936/1937 reopening on 6th March 1937 as the Lyric Cinema, with Anna Neagle in “Lime-Light” & Jack Holt in “Dangerous Waters”. Seating was now provided for 838 on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped section at the rear rather than an overhanging balcony. The proscenium was 50 feet wide.
The Lyric Cinema was closed on 6th January 1968, playing Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” as its final film. It was converted into the Lyric Bingo Club. The bingo club was closed on 2nd February 1990.
It was converted into retail use, and by November 2008 it was a Pound discount supermarket.
