Located in the St. Martin’s district of the city. The Empire Cinema was opened in May 1913, and was built for and operated by H.S. Gosling. It was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system, showing its first talkie Janet Gaynor in “Sunny Side Up” on 12th January 1931. By 1934 it was operated by Eastern Counties Cinemas Ltd. chain.
The Empire Cinema was destroyed by German bombing raids on the city on April 27 & 29 1942.
